Episode 91 of the Brain Science Podcast is an interview with Dr. Jaak Panksepp, author of the pioneering textbook "Affective Neuroscience." In this episode we talk about his latest book "The Archaeology of Mind: Neuroevolutionary Origins of Human Emotions." For decades Dr. Panksepp has been compiling evidence that the primary emotional processes begin in the lower (older) parts of the brain that are shared by all mammals. This latest book updates that evidence. Panksepp's work has the potential to revolutionalize neuroscience, much in the way that the discovery of brain plasticity over turned longstanding assumptions about the brain. Episode 90 of the Brain Science Podcast is a discussion of "Self Comes To Mind: Constructing the Conscious Brain" by Antonio Damasio. Damasio's book focuses on the answer to two key questions: How does the brain generate the Mind? and How does the Brain generate Consciousness? His approach is unusual because many scientists and writers treat the Mind and Consciousness as identical. In contrast, Damasio argues that Mind proceeds Consciousness. Listen to this podcast to learn how the Mind becomes Conscious. For episode shownotes, including references and free episode transcripts go to http://brainsciencepodcast.com.
